In this intensive two day workshop the students will learn to use the
Impressionist palette of colors to describe light and form. We will begin
by painting simple still life motifs, designed to train and energize your
color perception. We will then move into more advanced motifs, with a

Get the plein air season off on the right foot with a two day immersion
in oil landscape painting, and prepare for Paint Snow Hill, an exciting
three days of painting with sixty artists April 18-20. This workshop will
focus on training the student to see the variations in value and color
in the emerging foliage and to use the Impressionist palette of colors
to capture the subtleties in the spring light and atmosphere. We will
also explore and apply principles of composition that will enhance your
work. Come prepared to paint the sunset at the end of the first day. I
will demonstrate both days and the workshop will conclude with a group
critique. A lunch will be provided each day for an additional $10/day.

Painting the Summer Landscape in Oil,
Using the Impressionist Palette of Colors

Learn to paint dynamic, light-filled landscapes in oil, using a palette
of colors that corresponds to the natural spectrum of light. This three
day workshop will focus on training the student’s color perception,
the juxtaposition of shapes and color values in the landscape, and capturing
the changing effects of light. We will also explore and apply principles
of composition that will enhance your work. Be prepared to paint the sunset
on the second day of the workshop. I will demonstrate frequently and the
workshop will conclude with a group critique.

Stonington, a rugged working harbor, is situated at the southern tip of
Deer Isle. Dramatic views of the harbor provide endless subjects for painting.
Windjammers coming and going under sail and the many islands receding
into the distance create an interesting visual dynamic. In this workshop
the students will learn to capture the August light, using the Impressionist
palette of colors. We will also explore principles of composition in this
stimulating setting. Come prepared to paint spectacular summer sunsets
at least two evenings during the workshop. I will demonstrate frequently
and the workshop will conclude with a group critique. Materials
