On his return home, Lee immediately applied all that he had learned in oil to his beloved Watercolor Paintings. Maintaining a single-minded focus on Impressionist painting in watercolor for twenty years, he developed and perfected many techniques for painting the changing effects of light in this translucent medium. In 2004, Watson Guptill published Painting the Impressionist Watercolor, a book Lee co-authored with Linda Gottlieb, one of his students. Lee has had opportunities to use and hone his skills in both oil and watercolor throughout his artistic career. In 1995, the City of Annapolis commissioned him to paint three large oil murals for the City Council Chambers at City Hall to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Annapolis as the state capital. In 2006, he completed a large narrative history painting in oil for the Londontown visitors’ center. His work is on permanent display at several other historic sites in the Annapolis area. Lee is founder and president of the Mid Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association. He has received top awards for his watercolor and oil paintings at Plein Air Easton, The Wayne Arts Festival and Paint Annapolis. |
